Frequently Asked Questions

While we always encourage eager minds to ask questions about us, our Lodge, and Freemasonry in general, we have also found it helpful to give a few answers up front.

What Is A Blue Lodge?

The Blue Lodge is where men become Masons. While there are different organizations operating under the banner of Free And Accepted Masonry, the Blue Lodge is the most important piece.

In order to be a Shriner, Scottish Rite, or York Rite Mason, you must first become a Master Mason and maintain your affiliation with your Blue Lodge.

There is no degree higher than that of a Master Mason. It doesn’t matter whether you attained the 32nd Degree of the Scottish Rite or are a Knight Templar in the York, we are all equal here in the Blue Lodge.

How Many Degrees Are There In Masonry?

There are three degrees in Masonry:

Entered Apprentice, Fellow Craft, and Master Mason.

All three are considered to be Masons. The goal of becoming the Entered Apprentice is to become the Master.

All Master Masons have begun as Entered Apprentices.

How Do I Become A Mason?

If you wish to become a Mason, all you simply must do is ask one. The easiest way to become a Mason in Sweetwater Lodge is to contact the Office of the Secretary or come to one of our monthly Stated Meetings.

In order to become a Mason, you must ask. We cannot ask you.

What Happens After I Ask To Become A Mason?

After you have made it known to a Mason of Sweetwater Lodge you wish to become a Mason, you will be asked to fill out a Petition.

Two Master Masons must sign your petition.

They are vouching for you that they consider you worthy to receive the Degrees of Masonry. Those Master Masons must be in good standing with their own Lodge.

Hand in your petition with an application fee before one of our monthly Stated Meetings or give it to a Mason of Sweetwater Lodge so he may deliver it to the Office of the Secretary. You can also mail it to our Post Office Box.

The Secretary will then formally deliver your petition to the Lodge.

We will get back to you.

What Happens If I’m Not Accepted?

Though it very rarely happens, it is possible that an applicant will be rejected to receive the degrees of Masonry from a Blue Lodge.

In the event the Masons of Sweetwater Lodge fail to accept your Petition, we will return your application and the fee.

You are not barred from seeking admission at another Lodge, but you must wait a year before petitioning Sweetwater or any other lodge.

Can I start my Degree Work At One Blue Lodge And Switch To Another?

If you begin work with a Blue Lodge, we recommend you complete it through them. However, if by circumstance or desire you wish to switch Lodges, you may begin that process by contacting the Secretary of the Lodge you wish to join.

Can I Visit Other Lodges Once I Become A Mason?

When you become a Master Mason, you receive your Dues Card. This card shows that you are a member of the Fraternity. Fellow Craft and Entered Apprentices need not pay dues.

Showing your Dues Card alongside some other subtle tests will reveal whether or not you are a Master Mason to any Master Mason inspecting you prior to entry into his Lodge.

Other Lodges may invite you in as an Entered Apprentice or Fellow Craft. In order to sit in during a meeting of Master Masons or special event at another Lodge, you must be a Master Mason unless that Lodge specifically says otherwise
